Welcome to Matala Crete - the place of spectacular sunsets, a small fishing village where the caves became a paradise for the "hippies" in the 70's. The hippies are missing, but Matala magic still flows and the village has been spruced up - well done!

We are very excited for having the opportunity to guide you in Matala Crete, Greece and in our hotel. We believe that Matala is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and we are really happy to be here.

We speak Greek, English and also understand a little German. The best part of our job is the opportunity we have to meet people from many different countries. We often organize "International" nights where people cook something traditional from their home country and we share it all together with good wine and a lot of fun. We've been there in September 2008 and it was our first time in Crete.
We were welcomed heartily by the owner and her son. Seems they have already awaited us (our flight was delayed) because they asked if we got lost on the way from the airport to Matala which is about a 1 1/2 hours drive.
Our room was not big but very clean aswell as the bathroom. There was enough space for our clothings and stuff.
They have a small pool with a fantastic enviroment there and it's good enough to cool you down after a hot day's hike.

The hotel is situated on the outskirts of Matala therefore it's very quiet there. It's not a hotel to party ;) It's about a 300 m walk to the village of Matala, the beach and the caves. It's a small hotel with about 15 rooms with a little balcony or terrace in front of each room.

Usually you have to check out until 12 pm. Our flight was at night and we asked the owner if we could leave our stuff at the reception which was ok for her. Additional to that she invited us to use her shower before we leave if we wanna spend our last day at the beach. I was very surprised. I never had such an offer before and we were happy we could use it.

Chania-Rethimno-Kournas
Chania is the old capital of Crete and has a distinct Venetian influence with its lovely hurbour and beautiful architecture. Chania is great for shopping and if you are buying presents and souvenirs this excursion is for you.There is the famous Leather Lane, the gold and jewellery shops of Halidon street and the busy Chania market, all a few minutes walk of each other.

Phaistos-Mires-Gortys-Matala
We visit the famous Minoan Palace at Phaistos. It stands on a hill at the edge of the Messara plain, which the dominates.
Phaistos was one of the oldest and most important Cretan cities and is second to Knossos in archaeological terms. The dynasty of Rodamanthys is said to have ruled there.
At Mires the capital of the fertile Messara plain, you are free to stroll through the market at your own place.

Cretan Evening
A night to remember! An experience! In a typical tavern of Axo we invite you to sample traditional Cretan raki and the fine village wines. You will enjoy the Cretan music and your turn will come to show your paces at the dance troupe lead you in the steps of some of the easier dances. Make sure that you have your cameras and plenty of film.
