Heraklio AirportCrete primary airport serves most travelers to the island
Conveniently located at the edge of Heraklion, this small airport has basic customs facilities and a small parking lot.
The official name is the Nikos Kazantzakis Airport, but it is usually referred to as Heraklion Airport. It may also be spelled Iraklion.
The airport code is HER and this is what should appear on your baggage claim checks if you are checking through the Heraklion.
Heraklion has customs services, so it is possible with many airlines to check through luggage all the way.
If you are looking to check your baggage for a few hours, the baggage check kiosk is located in the parking lot. A few Euro per bag will hold it for you in a secure area. This facility is presently open 24 hours a day, but if you are planning on retrieving your luggage at an off hour, make sure this is true at the time you are using the service.

It is not cheap - the average persons bags will run about twelve Euro - but it will make last-minute sightseeing in Heraklion much more pleasant if you can do it without your bags. With the city itself only twenty minutes and half a Euro away, this sure beats sitting at the airport if your tour group drops you off early.
